Let’s Encrypt SSL expiration has caused a massive website outage today.
MANY websites and Internet service operators use a company called Let’s Encrypt for what’s called SSL Certificates. These certificates are a way for websites and services to be “signed” for use on the Internet and backend systems. Unfortunately, even with plenty of advanced notice, the Let’s Encrypt root certificate was set to expire today, causing massive disruption to internet connectivity. Many organizations saw this in the form of certificate errors while trying to access certain websites.
We are aware that Let’s Encrypt is trying to resolve the issue, but it may take some time for the issue to be completely resolved.
In addition, there is another mainstream root certificate that is due to expire later today as well. It is possible that this may also cause some disruption until the owners of that certificate can get resolved.
